New Tom Petty Song Gainsville Is Exactly What We Needed Today

On the first anniversary of his passing, we’ve been treated to one of the really great unheard songs from American Treasure, the deluxe retrospective of Tom Petty’s enormous body of work. The deluxe download, which is the equivalent of four CDs includes many outtakes, demos, live tracks and alternate versions.

One of the outstanding tracks provided comes from the Echo sessions. Gainesville is classic Petty/Heartbreakers fare, with a familiar blend of acoustic, jangle and upbeat rhythm. It was cut from the release for just those reasons, it didn’t seem to fit with the dark tone of the album,.

The video was released late yesterday and it was directed by photographer Brantley Gutierrez. The piece blends old film of his early 70s Gainesville days and newer footage accented with vintage filters. As we think back to what Tom’s music meant to us, it’s great to see a song from the early era, in video form, to reignite the nostalgia fire.

Be sure to listen from 10 til Midnight today as we pay tribute to Petty’s work with two songs each hour and clips of Tom and his friends talking about his music, life and loves.
