Chiefs and John Dorsey Part Ways

In a shocking turn of events today the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to part ways with General Manager John Dorsey.  Dorsey has been the Chiefs’ General Manager since 2013 and, along with Andy Reid, took the franchise from total disarray, to being a solid and stable organization.  According to Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt, he informed Dorsey that he would not receive a contract extension beyond 2017, and after discussion they agreed it best to part ways immediately.  You can read the full story on the release of Dorsey here.

This news comes on the heels of coach Andy Reid getting a multi-year contract extension earlier today as well.  The timing of the news is rather puzzling but the move is not completely out of left field somewhere.  It’s no secret that the Chiefs are in some trouble regarding the salary cap, part of that is because they drug their feet on paying their elite players (Justin Houston and Eric Berry) and ended up paying them above market value because they proved their worth playing under the franchise tag.  I’ve always felt that it is better to pay a guy too early, than to pay late and the Chiefs are paying the penalty for paying late right now.  They did do right by Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (LDT) by paying him a year early so that they don’t have to go over the top to keep him after the season.  I can’t help but feel that the mis-management of the Salary Cap is the main reason for Dorsey not being renewed as GM in Kansas City.  Hopefully, whoever the next GM is, will do a better job of managing the cap.

Remember to catch the Chiefs all season long on Topkea’s Rock Leader V100 and join me up in St. Joe for Training Camp starting in late July! GO CHIEFS!!!!
