Kansas City Chiefs vs Cincinnati Bengals Recap: Dominance From Start to Finish

The Kansas City Chiefs are now 6-1 on the season after a dominant home win against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday night. This was the game that many in the Chiefs Kingdom were waiting for. The game where their team played complete football from start to finish, didn’t take their foot off the gas, and ran the opposition right out of the building. During the first 6 weeks of the NFL season, the Chiefs offense had been the toast of the league, getting praised by all, but the defense had been much maligned. Sure, for the most part, they’d done enough to get by and get the win, but with final scores that didn’t really tell the story of how dominant the Chiefs had been in games. Their last 2 home games have told that story. The defense has come to play, and if that is the type of defensive effort the Chiefs can give, then there isn’t a single team in the league that can hang with them. A few observations from last night’s drubbing of the Bengals.

  • Kareem Hunt is so special. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, Kareem Hunt is an unbelievably talented player who is so much fun to watch play football. He’s always falling forward, never goes down from first contact, and finds ways to make you say “wow” every single week. He scored 3 TDs last night, 2 receiving and one on the ground, and left the entrie stadium speechless.

That tweet, and entire thought process was brought about by this play made by Hunt in the 1st Quarter.

  • The Chiefs defense feeds off of the crowd in a big way. The Kansas City Chiefs much maligned defense has quietly turned in 2 stellar performances in their last 2 home games. Holding Jacksonville to 14 points and Cincinnati to 10. Granted the Jaguars aren’t an offense to write home about, but the Bengals offense had quietly been averaging 29 points per game themselves coming into Sunday Night; and the Chiefs held them to 10. That’s an impressive effort.
  • Dorian O’Daniel may be a steal. O’Daniel was the Chiefs’ 3rd round draft choice this year and is kind of a hybrid linebacker/safety in the defense. He saw the most game action he had seen so far this season against Cincinnati this week, and it showed. He was very impressive with both covering backs out of the backfield and making tackles in space. If he can continue to develop those parts of his game, and be consistent with it, the Chiefs may have found a way to plug one of their most glaring weaknesses.
  • Dee Ford continues his breakout season. Through 7 games now, Ford has 5 total sacks, but that doesn’t tell the full story. Ford is quick off the edge, constantly disrupting plays, and even if he’s not the one getting every sack, he’s forcing the opposing QB to move off of his spot on a consistent basis. The Chiefs are reaping the benefits of Ford being in a contract season, let’s hope he continues to make the most of the situation.
  • The Chiefs have some legitimate depth on the offensive line. Jordan Devey and Andrew Wylie both played very well in relief of the injured Mitch Morse and Laurent-Duvernay Tradif respectively. The fact that the offensive line can be down 2 starters and still open big holes and effectively protect the quarterback speaks volumes for this team and the depth that they have along the line.

The Kansas City Chiefs will face the Denver Broncos for the 2nd time coming up on Sunday. In week 4, Denver held Kansas City to their lowest offensive output of the season and are coming in hot after a 45-10 decimation of the Arizona Cardinals last Thursday. The Chiefs haven’t lost to the Broncos since week 2 of the 2015 season, at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City needs to re-focus and be ready, because they are going to get Denver’s best shot in this one.
